Book 3. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
This week's book was Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John Le Carre. I have to admit I became aware of this book by watching Amazon Prime Movies. I had watched the movie and had Russia House on my watch list. That was enough for Jeffmart and his Artificial Intelligence to recommend The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, The Little Drummer Girl, and The Constant Gardener. At some point, as I was flipping through trailers and adding things to my watch list....I noticed. These movies that I enjoyed were all written by John le Carre. I was simultaneously awash with regret and excitement. Why hadn't I read any of these books? Oh my goodness, I get to read these books for the first time! I'm now two books into his cannon, and already I am prepared to declare I've struck gold! Are spy thrillers your jam? Do you crave suspense? To be clear, these aren't James Bond-style kiss-kiss bang-bang affairs. This book could be a Broadway play, with two actors and a kitchen table between them. The sort of play where the actors never move and the set never changes, yet halfway through, you are on the edge of your seat in a cold sweat. If you believe your brain can move faster than any car chase or that the plot should somehow move faster than mere dialog, then I humbly suggest John le Carre.
